Antigua ciudad de Media oriental.

Fue una de las grandes ciudades de Irán; sus ruinas están en la actual ciudad de Rey, cerca de Teherán. Su asentamiento más antiguo data del tercer milenio BC. Bajo la dinastía sasánida (s. III–VII AD) fue un centro del zoroastrismo. Los musulmanes la capturaron en AD 641. Creció en importancia hasta el s. XII, época en que se debilitó debido a conflictos religiosos. En 1220 fue destruida por los mongoles y sus habitantes fueron masacrados. Era famosa por sus sedas decoradas y sus cerámicas. El califa abasida Harun al-Rashid, inmortalizado en Las mil y una noches, nació allí 765. Los únicos restos arquitectónicos que quedan son dos torres.
